The
breakthrough of the beat generation of the sixties was followed by the
appearance of the half- Indian Ken Kesey on the stage of the American literature.
His first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was published in 1962 and it
was a great success in Hungarian, too. The book is characterised by brave,
direct momentum, an exciting plot, an excellently structured symbolism and
bizarre and yet genuine portrayal. The venue is a mental hospital. The
characters are patients and nurses. The topic is if these miserable wrecks are
able stand up. The novel suggests that we need to rebel against injustice even
in hopeless defencelessness because sacrifice may be painful but not aimless,
maybe there is return to the lost humanity.
