The Gödöllő
Association of Young Artist performed the rock opera Hamlet in 1999 and they
have performed it 35 times in 15 cities if the country since then and a musical
material appeared on sale in 2000.
A new generation grew up in a decade, for which it was a novelty to have a
musical adaptation of classical drama, so the Association renewed the
performance in 2008. Another decade has passed since then and on the 20th
anniversary of the foundation of the Association the rock opera is performed
again in 2018. The creators win the attention of the audience with an honest,
emotional play instead of spectacular crowd scenes; they emphasize those parts
from Shakespeare’s classical drama about which they can form their own opinion,
keeping the conception and atmosphere of the drama. They keep the youthful
swing, devotion and play coming from the heart, which made the rock opera
successful, on the other hand the experiences of the past years are also built
in to the performance. This is how the directing and scoring changes and a new
song and two new roles make the musical drama complete.
The performance can be called a total theatre because the songs are accompanied
by an orchestra with 14 members live and besides this prose, dance, movement
theatre and video technology make the experience full.
The creators keep the strengths of the earlier performance and add new colours,
songs, some humour and even more whirling direction to make the evening
memorable for those who already know the rock opera and for those who haven’t
seen it yet, too.

... The play is accompanied live by a rock band and a ‘small symphonic
orchestra’. The musicians are integrated parts of the performance and also the
‘setting’ which does not change and concentrates on functionality. The music is
born on spot. In front of us, in an individual way. This is not sterile machine
music which is unfortunately so popular in the professional world. Today when
musicians are more and more missing out from selling music (at least from the
profit, due to downloads) stage presence becomes essential. Life music,
especially when the musicians can be seen as well is a wonderful thing. The
extra applause of the audience to the musicians proves that at today’s
performance as well. I am pleased to sum up to myself that tonight nothing was
missing to have a real theatre experience. Everything was present: humble, yet
violent adaptation to the needs of the role (Hamlet – András Géczi), amazingly
clear voice (Gertrud – Anna Herczenik), professional character forming
(Polonius –Imre Józsa), acting behind
own limits (Ophelia – Krisztina Miklós), especially powerful stage presence
(Laertes – Balázs Molnár) and the ability to have a perfect identification with
the figure and the whole character (Claudius – Sándor Venyige)...”’

‘The play includes all emotional manifestations from sob-inducing touching
scenes to fit despair, from fit of rage to pensiveness. There isn’t a single
minute which is unnecessary or is just a filler, the two acts are set so that the
plot is clear even for those who have never read the story.... It is a real
rock opera where the guitar cries, the musician improvises, the drum clunks and
at the same time it is scored for a symphonic orchestra...’
