They were celebrated opera singers. Now they are retired. A tenor, a bass, and an alto live in peaceful actors’ home and one day the soprano moves in as well. The once legendary quartet is complete again.
Every role is unchanged: the exalted Rigoletto, the coquettish Maddalena, the sensitive Prince, and the erratic Gilda. There are insults and attractions, just as if it happened yesterday, alliance and defiance, just as if it happened yesterday. A big task is waiting for them: a Verdi gala after so many years in front of an audience. But are their voices as good as they were when they were in their heyday? And where does the private person end and where does the artist start anyway?
Ronald Harwood (author of ‘The Dresser’ and the Oscar winning ‘The Pianist’) talks about being forever young and the power of art in his play with irony and lots of humour.
