"Bandika, for how much would you be a woman instead of me?"
(Margit Kaffka’ letter to Endre Ady)

In the first years of the Hungarian literary journal ‘Nyugat’ (‘West’) literature was renewed and parallelly a silent revolution started in the Hungarian society.  A lot of civilian women desired to or had to leave their ‘private motherhood’ to achieve existence, success and acknowledgement on their own. This transitional era had some emblematic figures among women related to the journal as writers, muses, wives or friends, the fate and work of whose has become a blurred part of our cultural heritage.

‘NőNYUGAT’ is about them. About their loves, marriages, successes and failures. About their spoken, written and forgotten words. About their sagacity that made them analyse themselves and their contemporary with enthusiasm. ‘NőNyugat’ is not an audio literary history or a belated compensation for women living and writing behind great men. At least not that way.  If I need to put it in one word, this is speaking: we need to speak about them, speak about ourselves, speak about women and men, speak about how we can live a full life and face the appalling impossibility of it.
