Marlies
Claasen singer and the Budapest Saxophone Quartet first met at one of the
concerts of the quartet in Holland in October 2012. As they heard the famous
and popular pieces of music, they started thinking of the idea of a possible
mutual, interesting and unique project, because the audience accepted those
pieces there with applause (e.g. Astor Piazzolla: Oblivion). The Budapest
Saxophone Quartet has regularly had concerts together with different formations
for a long time (e.g. jazz trio), so the question arose if they could have a
mutual project with Marlies Claasen’s trio. Since then they have managed to
create a special schedule which has appealed to several prominent people. The
original idea was that the saxophone quartet only contributes to a few songs on
the new album of the Marlies orchestra but finally much more exciting own songs
(as well as film music, famous performers’/composers’ songs) were involved in
their mutual production, because this special musical instrument composition
and set (female vocal, guitar, percussions, four saxophones and clarinets) creates
a new, individual sound in their performance. Their first mutual album appeared
in 2013 with the title ‘Silent Words’ and they started an album debut tour in
Holland in 2014. The success of this unique production is proven by the fact
that in autumn 2015, when they had four concerts in Hungary, it was always full
house and the audience accepted them with ovation.
The songs of the repertoire of the orchestra are mainly composed by the married
couple Claasen-Klein: Marlies mainly writes the lyrics and Tom Klein composes
the melodies. One of their really popular songs is ‘Dad’s Guitar’. The result
of their mutual production is the famous song ‘Tavaszi szél vizet áraszt’
(‘Spring wind floods water’), which always appeals to the audience even abroad,
due to its unique scoring.
