The Georgian State Folk Dance Company – There is only one original…
The gala tour of the 70th anniversary of the company in Hungary.

When we read Georgian State Folk Dance Company and we try to search for a memory in our head, which company it may be, we are at the right place when we think these are those ‘crazy’ dance artists who are able to land smoothly on their knees even after a giant jump.  Yes. On their knees. The whole world wonders how they are able to do all this. Not to mention that these male dancers tiptoe on the stage with a wide smile on their faces between these spectacular jumps and spins.

The ‘Sukhishvili’ Georgian State Folk Dance Company was the first professional state dance company in Georgia, it was founded in 1945 by Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili.
Nino Ramishvili and Iliko Sukhishvili were inseparable partners both on stage and in their private lives. They achieved their goals with resoluteness and new ideas, the result of which is this company. Their mutual life was an adventure full of creativity, which reached completeness through generations of dancers.
It is absolutely their achievement that the Georgian folk dance became well-known all over the world.
After the death of Iliko Sukhishviliin 1985, the dancer, Tengiz Sukhushvili (1938-2007) became the artistic leader of the company, following the family traditions.
At the moment Tengiz Sukhishvili’s daughter, the granddaughter of the founder, Company Director Nino Sukhishvili leads the company; Iliko Sukhishvili Jr, the grandson of the founders is the artistic leader and main choreographer.
Since 1945 three generations of the Sukhishvili family have devoted their lives to the Georgian State Folk Dance Company.

The company has appeared on almost all stages of the world with huge success, among others in the Opera House in Sydney, the Albert Hall, the Coliseumban, a Metropolitan Opera and many other famous places. The Georgian State Folk Dance Company has been the one and only folk dance company which could perform on the most famous stage with the highest standards, the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan. It was an unprecedented event, the curtains rose 14 times, which is an unbreakable record.

The Georgian State Folk Dance Company celebrates its 70th jubilee with a 2-hour programme showing us a story about the fights, sufferings and heroism of the Georgian folk, accompanied by live music.  Fabulous costumes and a wonderful choreography show us the Georgian spirit: the men surprise us revealing their temperament and nature which is soldierly and noble at the same time. Their skills are enthralling, they dance in soft leather shoes without hard sole, they spin and jump on tiptoes and between two heart beats they spin on on knee.Breathtakingly beautiful women slide on the stage; they attract the viewers with their charming dances. The history of Georgia is set for the audience. The Georgian spirit sets the viewers on fire and fills their hearts with unforgettable experience.

The Georgian State Folk Dance Company keeps renewing the Georgian dance because the company is not a dance museum, so they need to change and develop by the time.
The folklore elements (choreography, music) are modernised with classical dance elements. This is what makes the company unique and so different from any other companies.
